Mid-Year Applications

Applying for a School Place Mid-Year in Milton Keynes

Whether you’re relocating to Milton Keynes for work, moving to a different grid square within the city, or simply feel your child needs a fresh start, applying for a school place outside of the standard September intake is known as an “In-Year Admission.”

Because MK is one of the fastest-growing cities in the UK, navigating in-year admissions can be challenging. Here is exactly how the process works in 2026.

The Reality of Mid-Year Moves in MK

It’s important to be realistic: many of the most popular and highly-rated schools in Milton Keynes are completely full, and often have waiting lists.

If you are moving into a specific catchment area (Defined Area) mid-year, living there does not mean the local school legally has to magically create a desk for your child if they are at capacity. If your catchment school is full, Milton Keynes City Council will try to offer you a place at the nearest school with an available space.

Step 1: Find Out Who to Apply To

While MK City Council handles the bulk of applications, the process differs slightly depending on the school:

  • Maintained Schools: You must apply directly through the Milton Keynes City Council Citizen Portal.
  • Academies & Free Schools: While many use the council portal, some require you to apply directly to the school itself. Always check the specific school’s website first under their “In-Year Admissions” section.

Step 2: Submit the Application

If applying via the council, you can list up to four preferences.

  • Proof of Address: You will need solid proof of your MK address (a tenancy agreement, council tax bill, or solicitor’s completion letter). You cannot apply based on an address you hope to move to; you must have legally exchanged contracts or signed a lease.

Step 3: The Waiting Game

Once you submit an in-year application, the council or school must process it. By law, you should receive a written outcome within 15 school days. (Note: This means holidays and weekends don’t count!).

What if You Are Refused a Place?

If a school is full, you will be sent a formal refusal letter. From there, you have two options:

  1. Join the Waiting List: You have the right to be added to the school’s continuing interest list. Your position on the list is dictated by the admissions criteria (catchment, siblings, distance), not by how long you’ve been waiting. You can move down the list if someone who lives closer moves into the area!
  2. Appeal: You have a legal right to appeal to an Independent Appeal Panel. However, “infant class size legislation” makes it exceptionally difficult to win an appeal for Reception, Year 1, or Year 2 unless the school made a critical administrative error.

A Note for New Arrivals to the UK

If you are moving to Milton Keynes from overseas, you can only submit an application once the child is physically resident in the UK (unless you hold a specific visa, such as a BNO visa or crown servant status). Ensure your visas and right of abode documents are ready to upload to the portal.
