If your idea of a perfect weekend involves browsing independent stalls, vibing to Caribbean beats, and soaking up some serious community spirit (without having to stand in the freezing October rain), mark your calendar now.
This Saturday 10 October, Xscape Milton Keynes is teaming up with MK Melting Pot for a massive community takeover to celebrate Black History Month. Whether you want to support local creators, find valuable community resources, or just need to tire the kids out with some storytelling, we have put together a quick guide to what is going on.
The Vibe
This year’s national Black History Month theme is Honouring Our Communities, and the event at Xscape is leaning right into it. While it is always important to look back at historical figures, this weekend focuses heavily on the here and now. It is all about the local heroes, families, and grassroots groups making MK tick every single day.
The usually bustling walkways of Xscape will be dressed to the nines with colourful decorations and balloons between 11am and 4pm. More importantly, they are bringing in a live DJ to spin Caribbean music all day long. Because honestly, shopping and browsing are just better with a proper soundtrack.
What is actually happening?
- Shop Independent: Xscape is making space for independent traders and businesses run by marginalised groups. Put down the generic high street stuff and buy something with an actual story behind it.
- Real Support: It is not just about retail therapy. You will find stalls offering genuine resources on mental health, financial advice, and youth empowerment.
- For the Kids: Dragging little ones along? Do not panic. There are dedicated crafting sessions and storytelling circles designed to keep them entertained while you grab a coffee or browse the stalls in peace.
Who is setting up shop?
The lineup of stallholders is a brilliant mix of local talent and essential community support networks. Expect to see:
- MK Melting Pot
- Action Speaks CIC
- MoneyHeave
- Black Creatives
- Funmi’s Rentals
- Princess’s Jewellery & Attire
- Shadz’s Art
- MG Perfumery
- Stop Mental Illness Foundation UK
- Be Your Crown
What the organisers say
Dan Murphy, Centre Director at Xscape MK, says the event is a valuable opportunity to celebrate the people and stories that make Milton Keynes such a vibrant place.
“By sharing the stories and contributions from the diverse groups that shape Milton Keynes, we can celebrate the strength and diversity of our community as a whole while inspiring future generations to make a positive impact,” he said.
Jade Jaiyeola, organiser and coordinator behind MK Melting Pot, echoed this. She explained that their mission is all about creating spaces where people feel seen, supported, and connected.
“Black History Month is an important opportunity to recognise the care, creativity, and leadership within our communities, and we are excited to showcase local talent, share valuable resources, and give families a joyful day of music, storytelling, and connection,” Jade added.
