Catchment Areas Guide
How Do School Catchment Areas Work in Milton Keynes?
If you’re applying for a school place in Milton Keynes, you’ll quickly hear the term “catchment area” thrown around. However, Milton Keynes City Council officially refers to these as “Defined Areas.” With MK expanding rapidly—especially with new developments like MK East and the continued growth in the western expansion areas—understanding how these boundaries work in 2026 is crucial for securing a place at your preferred school.
What is a Defined Area?
Every address in Milton Keynes is assigned a “Defined Area” for primary and secondary education. If you live within a school’s Defined Area, your child is given a higher priority for admission compared to children who live outside of it.
Crucial reality check: Living in a school’s Defined Area does not guarantee you a place. It simply pushes you higher up the priority list. If a school is heavily oversubscribed by children within its own catchment (which happens frequently in highly sought-after areas like Shenley Brook End, Loughton, or Oakgrove), the council uses “distance from the school” as the ultimate tie-breaker.
How Priority and Admissions Work
When MK City Council allocates school places, they generally follow this priority order:
- Children in Care (Looked After Children).
- Siblings: Children who live in the Defined Area and already have a sibling at the school.
- Catchment Residents: Children who live in the Defined Area.
- Out-of-Catchment Siblings: Children who live outside the area but have a sibling attending.
- Distance: Everyone else, prioritized by how close they live to the school.
The “Distance” Tie-Breaker
In MK, distance isn’t measured by driving routes or how long it takes to walk along the Redways. The council measures it in a straight line from the front door of your home to the school’s main entrance using their computerized geographic mapping system.
What About New Build Estates?
If you’ve recently moved to a new development (like the MK East expansion), school catchments can be a bit fluid. Brand new schools (such as the new primary and all-through schools built to service these developments) will have highly localized priority zones. Until a new school is fully operational, your address will usually fall under the Defined Area of a neighboring estate’s school. Always check the official MK City Council portal for the most accurate, street-by-street map for the 2026/2027 academic year.
Can I Apply Outside My Catchment?
Yes, you have the right to put any school on your preference list! However, you must be realistic. If you apply for a highly oversubscribed school in another part of MK, you are very unlikely to get a place unless you meet other high-priority criteria.
Top Tip: Always list your catchment school as one of your choices (even if it’s your 3rd or 4th choice). If you don’t list it, and you miss out on your preferred schools, the council will allocate you to the nearest school with an empty desk—which could be miles away.
