The Peace Pagoda — Milton Keynes’ Extraordinary Landmark

On the north bank of Willen Lake in Milton Keynes stands something that has no obvious right to be here — a gleaming white Buddhist peace pagoda, built by monks and nuns using traditional methods, completed in 1980.

It was the first Buddhist peace pagoda built in the Western hemisphere. And it’s in MK.

The Story

In the late 1970s, members of the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist order — a Japanese sect dedicated to world peace — were invited to build a pagoda in the new city of Milton Keynes. The pagoda was conceived as part of a worldwide network of peace monuments, built in response to the devastation of World War Two and the ongoing threat of nuclear conflict.

Construction began in 1978. Monks and nuns built it by hand using traditional methods — no power tools, no mechanical lifting equipment where it could be avoided. The pagoda was consecrated in 1980.

It remains one of only a handful of Buddhist peace pagodas in the UK, and it was the first ever built in the Western hemisphere. That it sits in Milton Keynes is one of those facts that makes you reassess everything you think you know about the place.

What You’ll Find

The Pagoda itself — a white stupa rising from the north bank of Willen Lake. Four golden Buddha figures are positioned at the cardinal points around the base, each representing a different stage of the Buddha’s life. The structure is immaculately maintained.

The Buddhist Temple — adjacent to the pagoda, a traditional Japanese-style temple that is open to visitors when monks are present. Peaceful, beautifully decorated, and entirely authentic.

The grounds — the area around the pagoda is planted and maintained as a contemplative garden. Benches face the lake. The view across the water to the South Lake is one of the finest in MK.

The North Lake loop — the pagoda sits on the walking path around the North Lake. The full loop is approximately 2.5km and takes you through woodland and alongside the water — completing it and then crossing to the South Lake for the full 5km Willen loop is one of the best free walks in MK.
