When the weather finally warms up in Milton Keynes, the rush to find the perfect patch of grass is on.
We’ve already covered where to eat in Willen Lake and the best food spots near Campbell Park. However, sometimes you don’t want a busy day out. Sometimes, you just want to grab a beach towel, a good book, and soak up some sunshine.
Luckily, Milton Keynes is famous for its green spaces. We even have some fantastic open-air swimming pools right on our doorstep. You might want a lively atmosphere with ice cream on tap. Perhaps you prefer a quiet, secluded spot by the water or a proper outdoor swim. Either way, here is our complete guide to the best places to sunbathe in Milton Keynes.
1. Campbell Park: The City Centre Sun-Trap
If you live or work near Central Milton Keynes, Campbell Park is the absolute best spot for convenience. The park is essentially one massive, beautifully landscaped hill. This makes it incredibly easy to find a sloped patch of grass to catch the sun. Head up towards the Light Pyramid for the best views over North East MK. Alternatively, wander further down towards the canal for a flatter, quieter vibe.
It’s a really spacious and iconic place to sit. This makes it great for a lunch-break sunbathe. You can park for free at the Canalside car park on Silbury Boulevard or by the Cricket Pavilion. You won’t go hungry either. A short walk over the footbridge takes you to the centre:mk and Xscape for endless food options. You will find public toilets at the nearby MK Gallery.
2. Willen Lake: The Lively Lakeside Lounge
Willen Lake is the undisputed king of Milton Keynes summer days. Does your ideal sunbathing session include people-watching and a vibrant atmosphere? If you also want plenty of amenities, this is the place to be.
The South Lake has massive stretches of grass perfect for laying out a blanket. The vibe here is bustling and super family-friendly. You can easily cool down if you get too hot. Grab a cold drink from the Lakeside pub or the cafe. You will also usually find several ice cream vans parked up. It does get very busy on hot weekends, so arrive early to claim your prime spot. You can pay for parking via the RingGo app or at the machines. The site also features excellent public toilets and changing facilities.
3. Furzton Lake: The Best of Both Worlds
If Willen Lake is a bit too manic for your liking, Furzton Lake is the perfect compromise. It is beautifully scenic and takes about an hour to walk around. You will find sweeping grass banks ideal for throwing down a picnic blanket. This spot feels much more relaxed. It is a brilliant place to listen to a podcast and chill out without dodging stray footballs. It also offers some of the best sunset views in the whole city.
You can park for free at Lynmouth Crescent. The Shirwell Crescent car park offers two hours of free parking. If you stay longer, you must pay via the RingGo app. The Furzton Lake pub sits right on the water’s edge. This makes it perfect for grabbing a cold drink or a meal after your sunbathing session. Paying customers can also use the pub’s toilets.
4. Great Linford Manor Park: The Historic Hideaway
If you prefer your sunbathing with a side of history, Great Linford Manor Park is a stunning option. Recent massive restoration work has completely transformed the park. The heritage features, water gardens, and cascading ponds look better than ever.
It’s incredibly peaceful and manicured here. Lay your blanket out on the lawns near the historic manor house. You can also find a shaded spot under the beautiful old trees. Use the free parking at the Great Linford Memorial Hall off Marsh Drive. You will also find public toilets there during opening hours. The site lacks food options, so you should definitely pack your own picnic for this one.
5. Ouzel Valley Park: The Countryside Escape
Do you want to escape the city without actually leaving Milton Keynes? Ouzel Valley Park makes a fantastic choice. This sprawling park offers wide-open terrain, beautiful riverside paths, and ancient meadows.
Because the space is so vast and rural, you are guaranteed to find a quiet, completely uninterrupted spot to sunbathe. The Parks Trust uses grazing cattle and sheep to manage the land. Be prepared to share the distant views with them! You will find free car parks dotted along Newport Road near Woolstone. The park itself lacks direct facilities. However, The Barge Inn in Woolstone sits right on the edge of the park. This country pub makes an excellent pit-stop for food and a cold drink.
6. Caldecotte Lake: The Peaceful Picnic Spot
Tucked away in the south of MK, Caldecotte Lake is a haven for nature lovers. It is perfect if you want to escape the crowds. The lake is huge. You can usually find a quiet stretch of grass to yourself, even on the hottest days of the year. It’s the ultimate tranquil spot to lay back and watch the wildlife.
You will find free parking available. However, the main car park off Bletcham Way can get busy on sunny weekends. Hickory’s Smokehouse sits right on the lake. We highly recommend booking a table there. You can enjoy incredible BBQ food and a refreshing milkshake after a long day in the sun. Hickory’s customers can use the facilities inside the restaurant.
7. Blue Lagoon Local Nature Reserve: The Hidden Gem
Located down in Bletchley, the Blue Lagoon is a Local Nature Reserve built around a former brickworks pit. The water turns a stunning, striking blue on a sunny day. It makes you feel much further away than Buckinghamshire. The grassy areas around the reserve are incredibly secluded and rugged. They are perfect for sunbathing if you want to feel totally off the grid.
A dedicated free car park sits just off Drayton Road. Just pass under the railway bridge to access it. The site lacks food vendors and public toilets. You will need to bring your own supplies and remember to take your rubbish home.
A Quick Local Safety Note: The grassy banks are lovely for sunbathing. However, please do not swim in the Blue Lagoon. The water is exceptionally deep and suffers from extreme cold-water shock. Local authorities actively restrict swimming for safety reasons. Stick to the grass and enjoy the views!
